“May I…?”

The pictures for ‘May I…?’ were made during
my single encounters with amateur models in
hotel rooms.
The strip in front of the camera, the subjection of
the model to the photographer and the provocative
and seductive looks to the camera, are themes that
refer to classic ingrediënts of pornography and
fashion photography.
I take pictures of naked girls.
They witness my silent gaze.
I pay them to look at them.
I explore the fascination and sensation of watching
and the attraction of the one I am looking at,
from behind the mask of the photographer’s eye.
But would the one I’m watching at, grant me permission
to do so, if I hadn’t appeared to her as a ‘photographer’?
With these images I present an obsessive ritual in the
triangular relationship between photographer, model
and camera, which I question during these intimate
moments of voyeurism.

De foto’s voor ‘May I…?’ zijn gemaakt tijdens mijn eenmalige
ontmoetingen met amateurmodellen op hotelkamers.
Het strippen voor de camera, de onderwerping van het model
aan de fotograaf, gecombineerd door de uitdagende blikken in
de camera, zijn onderdelen die refereren aan klassieke ingrediënten
uit de porno en de modefotografie.
Ik richt mijn camera op naakte meisjes.
Ze zijn getuige van mijn zwijgzame staren.
Ik betaal aan hen om naar ze te kijken.
Wat zou ik van haar kunnen vragen en mogen verlangen?
Met deze beelden toon ik een theatraal en obsessief ritueel in
de driehoeksverhouding tussen fotograaf, model en camera en stel
ik mezelf de vraag hoe ver je als fotograaf mag gaan door enkel in stilte
naar het model te kijken.
